SYNOPSIS

Rising sea levels threaten to destroy the Pacific island nation of Kiribati. Anote’s Ark follows Kiribati’s then-President, Anote Tong on his mission to find a way to protect his nation’s people and bring international attention to the country’s existential dilemma.

The Pacific Island nation of Kiribati, population of 100,000, is one of the most remote places on the planet, seemingly far-removed from the pressures of modern life. Yet it is one of the first countries that must confront the main existential dilemma of our time: imminent annihilation from sea-level rise.

While Kiribati’s President Anote Tong races to find a way to protect his nation’s people and maintain their dignity, many Kiribati are already seeking safe harbour overseas.

Set against the backdrop of international climate and human rights negotiations, Anote’s struggle to save his nation is intertwined with the extraordinary fate of Tiemeri, a young mother of six, who fights to migrate her family to New Zealand. At stake is the survival of Tiemeri’s family, the Kiribati people, and 4,000 years of Kiribati culture.

This confronting story works as a looking glass into the future, and warns of the devastatingly real and life changing affects climate change will have on the rest of the world if immediate action is not taken.

THE CEMENT DOCO: YOUR DREAM WE WILL BUILD
Directed and Produced By Briana Charles & Bessie Byrne

“Your Dream We Will Build” is the slogan for a huge Australian backed cement mine and processing plant currently being built in East Timor. After hearing that many Timorese locals were concerned with the infrastructure project, the filmmakers decided to investigate whether it was necessary. They found a complicated and intriguing industry that is responsible for 8% of global carbon emissions and is in serious need of more scrutiny, transparency and a push towards sustainability. This film scratches the surface of a hard problem.
