Victor is a community organiser at Environment Victoria, supporting local people to take action on climate change. Hailing from Aotearoa New Zealand, Victor has recently joined the fight for climate justice here in Australia, where the problem – and the impacts – are far greater. Right now he’s working on Bunurong country with the Westernport Bay community to stop AGL from building a gas import terminal in the middle of the bay.
That gas import terminal would bring huge ships into one of Australia’s largest Ramsar-listed pristine wetlands, threatening birds and whales who rely on the bay for feeding and rest. The project would also lock in decades of emissions-intensive gas in Victoria, at a time where the climate crisis requires rapid transition away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy.
Victor is passionate about helping grassroots activists in all environmental and social battles connect the dots and their struggles. When we acknowledge that our economic system allows people to profit from the control and extraction of our land, water, wildlife, labour and culture, we can start to envisage and create a new future together.
